Pure Religion

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." James 1:27 KJV

Backstory: The book of James emphasizes practical do's and don'ts that followers of Christ should remember. In verse 27, James says to be genuine in our charitable deeds and cautious of worldly pollutants.

Response: The notoriety received in response to performing a generous act can be quite mentally satisfying. What a thrill to be recognized by people on social media, in the local news, or around the workplace. On the contrary, imagine being the homeless person who has to be televised for receiving a cup of water. While God desires for us to tend to marginalized communities, He instructs us to do so without seeking public reward. God will reward us for our works in the way and timing that He chooses. Performing charity in exchange for fame is a thing of the world. Followers of Christ do not seek after the world, but the kingdom of God and righteousness. God will add all that we need and desire, according to His will when we focus on appropriate matters.

We pray that you choose to selflessly bless someone else. Do not perform charitable deeds with selfish intents! There are many people in need of something that you have to offer. May God open your eyes to the ways that you can be a blessing: spiritually, financially, mentally, and more. Let go of worldly habits that plague your thinking and receive the mind of Christ. Our hope is that you identify at least one gift that God has given you that can be freely used to bless others.

In Jesus mighty name,

Hallelujah, Amen!
